Prime Minister Stephen Harper prorogued Parliament on December 30, effective until March 3, 2010. Harper cited Canada's economic troubles and challenges in hosting the upcoming Olympic Games as reasons behind his second prorogue in as many years.
This prorogue leaves 36 bills on the floor of Parliament, including a number of bills relating to tougher crime laws. This also allows Harper's Conservative to avoid an immediate debate on the torture of prisoners in Afghanistan, as well as the recent failure at the Copenhagen summit on climate change. All incomplete motions will have to begin again once Parliament resumes.
